What is a lead magnet and why do you need one? I find most authors don’t fully understand the POWER of a lead magnet and how it will help you sell more books.
In this tutorial, I share an illustration that will help you understand what a lead magnet is and how it works. When you get this system set up properly, you can start seeing book sales come in on autopilot!

What is a Lead Magnet?
A lead magnet is a free digital gift you give away to people who join your email subscriber list.
This whole process should be automated. You should have everything setup to work for you, 24/7, in building your tribe, and your lifers, on autopilot.
Remember, you should work smarter, not harder.
And every author should have one.
In this post, I will show you how important a lead magnet is and what comprises an effective lead magnet.
Step One: Lead Magnet is the Bait
What I want to show you first is that you need to have your target readers. That’s the basics of the entire process.
I’m not saying your readers are fish, but for this illustration, we’re going to say that your target reader is a fish.
So we have these fish swimming around, then we start asking these questions:
- How do we capture those potential readers and customers?
- How do we get them to even know we exist?
- How do we get them to know that we have a solution to their problem?
One of the best ways to do that is through a lead magnet. The lead magnet is your bait.
The lead magnet is what you’re going to use to entice your target reader, your target ideal customer to you.
Step Two: The Landing Page
The landing page is that page on your website where someone lands, as they click on your lead magnet.
Some people call it a squeeze page or an opt in page. I call it a hook.
As your lead magnet is the bait, your landing page is the hook.
This is where they will be able to put in their name and email address to sign up for your subscriber email list in order to get that free gift.
If you go to WritingWeek.com, that’s one of my landing pages.
When you look at it, there are only two options. You either have to make a decision to sign up for my free seven day non-fiction writing challenge or click away from the page.
So the landing page is what hooks your readers to get the lead magnet that you are offering.
A good landing page should not have any other navigation bars, headers, or any sort of distraction. It should only have that Landing page.
Step Three: The Nurture Sequence
Once you have your potential readers and customers sign up on your email subscriber list, it is now your responsibility to follow up.
You will now have these follow up emails that we will call, the nurture sequence.
These are the emails that should be automated. You should have these scheduled in your autoresponder so you would not have to send them out manually. Otherwise, you will end up sitting behind your computer all day.
They should be the same emails that go out to every new person that subscribes to that particular list. There should also be a specific order and specific thing that you’re doing in those emails.
That nurture sequence is like feeding your fish and cleaning their tank.
I was just visiting my sister and her family and my two nieces were actually fish sitting for some neighbors who were on vacation.
They had to remember to feed the fish every day, and they were instructed to clean the tank at least once a week.
Just like how they took care of the fish in the tank, you will need to take care and nurture your email subscribers. You need to take care of them and not just leave them hanging.
Step Four: The Thank You Page
I know a lot of authors are missing out on the follow up sequence and on this Thank You Page Offer.
If you take care and nurture your customers and readers, this is a bonus that you can apply as a lead magnet.
This is something that I’ve talked about in my recent training. It’s is on your thank you page that you can have even more results.
This is through setting up a small product or a tripwire offer that is usually ranging from $7-$10.
You can go back and watch one of my recent trainings all about setting up a small product or a tripwire offer, to know more about this.
My example, when you sign up for WritingWeek.com, on the thank you page you get an opportunity to join the full 30 day challenge for $10.
Thank you page can give you more results, and that’s like breeding your fish and multiplying your efforts with this.
Author Automation System
So if you take a look at this, it’s all about setting up the right system and automation and many of you don’t have it set up…yet.
That’s why I have created the Author Automation System. This is a system I have consistently used since 2012.
This system not only bring you more leads, but it runs on autopilot which will definitely make your work easier.
In the Author Automation System, I will show you the process of setting up that system and the different emails that you should write.
We also have templates for you and training to help you in the process.
I also go step by step into the exact process of setting up your landing page.
With Author Automation system, I use the most common email providers and I actually show you those specific email providers, on my screen, during the lecture.
I walk you step by step through the process in the Author Automation training in AuthorAudienceAcademy.com.
You can also read about the 5 Keys to Creating an Irresistible Lead Magnet, which discusses more about how to create an effective lead magnet.
Until next time, thank you and have a great day!
