Over the past few weeks, I have been reading the book, “Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook: How to Tell Your Story in a Noisy Social World” by Gary Vaynerchuk. During the book’s launch, I saw the book posted everywhere. It seemed everyone I knew was blogging about it, interviewing Gary or recommending the book. He is a master marketer himself! Therefore, I wanted to see what everyone was talking about. I requested a copy of the book to review and started digging in right away.
In the book, the author talks about how brands will need to get creative in their use of social media. The old methods of marketing will no longer work. I have been involved in some form of online marketing since 2004 and definitely agree with him on this point. Marketing has changed and we need to continue to change with it.
I saw two interesting marketing tactics by big companies on 12/5/13 as I was reading this book that show how some companies are getting creative with their social media marketing.
#1: Buick – They partnered with Rhett & Link to produce an entertaining and potentially viral music video “Get Off the Phone” that you can watch below. At the time of publishing this post, the video has over 1.1 million views on YouTube. I would say it has already went viral. 🙂
#2: DiGiorno Pizza – They tweeted during “Sound of Music Live” with entertaining tweets that strategically inserted their brand. Sneaky, sneaky! You can read their tweets here. Check out the number of retweets they had – one of their tweets was retweeted over 1,000 times. Not only that, but they got additional exposure on the media when LA Times and others posted their story online.
Have you seen any interesting and engaging posts on social media from big brands lately? Keep your eyes open and you will start to see more creativity in marketing in 2014.
Updated Social Media Information
Social media is evolving every day, but as of the time of writing this review, this book, “Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook” is a great overview for the major social media platforms. Gary starts out with an overview of how businesses should approach social media.
The bottom line?
We need to be engaging, creative and responsive to our audiences.
Jab, jab, jab, jab, jab . . . right hook!
Or in other words . . .
Give, give, give, give, give . . . ask.
He then goes into detail on how to best share your marketing message on specific platforms:
- Storytell on Facebook
- Listen Well on Twitter
- Glam It Up on Pinterest
- Create Art on Instagram
- Get Animated on Tumblr
He made it very clear that we need to ensure we modify our messages appropriately to the different social media platforms. I loved the real life examples he gave in each chapter with his review of a particluar brand’s social media post. He shared what they did right and what they did wrong. I found this helpful.
Social Media Checklists
My favorite part was the checklist at the end of the chapters for each platform that included questions to ask yourself about the content you post. I think these checklists will be handy reminders.
For example, here is his checklist for Facebook…
Questions to Ask When Creating Facebook Micro-Content:
- Is the text too long?
- Is it provocative, entertaining, or surprising?
- Is the photo striking and high-quality?
- Is the logo visible?
- Have we chosen the right format for the post?
- Is the call to action in the right place?
- Is this interesting in any way, to anyone? For real?
As you post information on Facebook, you can then come pack to his checklist and see if you are marketing appropriately for that particular audience.
Conclusion
Overall, this book was full of good reminders for me and I learned a few new things as well. I think it will be especially helpful to authors, businesses, and brands that are new to social media marketing. Note: the author does use crude language a few times within his book but I didn’t find it to be distracting from his message.
