Notes from this episode:
Developing a writing routine is something many writers struggle with. It is important to find a routine that works for each individual writer. Shelly shares three key points that can help most writers, but it’s important to remember that what works for one person may not work for another. This includes some trial and error and experimentation.
Start with 15 minutes
Set a timer and tell your brain that you’ll just sit down and write for 15 minutes. Giving your brain a short deadline can be powerful, as it’s easier to commit to a shorter time frame. Once you start, the flow may just keep going.
Create a writing space or rhythm
If you don’t have a dedicated writing space, consider having a designated bag or container to store your writing materials. This kind of routine can help your brain get into the rhythm of writing without distractions.
Consider a writing warm up
Don’t pressure yourself to produce a final draft right away. Instead, consider a writing warm up where you can just let go of all the thoughts and distractions. You can also use this time to write out a prayer for inspiration and guidance.
It is important to grant yourself a writing warm-up in recognition of the fact that perfection isn’t a prerequisite for writing. Just as athletes warm up before a competition, writers can benefit from loosening up with a freeform writing exercise or prayer, liberating their creative spirit from the tyranny of perfectionism.
