The Critical Mistake I Made that Caused Me to FAIL

Growing up, I didn’t fail too many tests.

However, I made one critical mistake that changed my perspective.

 The Story

Let me tell you the story that made me realize why it is necessary to live in the moment.

I was 16 years old then. I was taking my driver’s exam I was very confident. I’d been practicing and I did really well on the written exam. However, it was during the practical exam that I failed miserably.

They were giving me instructions and telling me where I was to go next. I was looking further ahead trying to follow their instructions, and eventually I missed a stop sign.

Right there in the middle of my driver’s exam I drove through a stop sign. This mistake caused me to immediately fail my driver’s exam.

The Lesson

Now, I can look back and I can make excuses.

Oh, there were branches over the stop sign. It was kind of covering it.

She was distracting me and telling me what to do way ahead.

However, I know that it was my fault and I take responsibility.

I got distracted. I got distracted looking ahead for what was coming instead of focusing in the present moment.

I wonder how many of us do that. Whether it’s in life or business, Sometimes, we get so focused to the future that we’re not fully present in the moment.

This causes us to miss things. Sometimes we miss critical things in our business or our relationships and our day to day life.

I can always remember this famous quote from Albus Dumbledore, in Harry Potter.

“It does not do good to dwell in dreams and forget to live.”

This quote says a lot about this situation. Yes, it is important to plan.

Yes, it’s important to look forward. But if we get so focused into the future, we will not be fully present today.

I encourage each one of us, let’s focus in the moment. Now I did pass it the second time, I’m happy to say. More than that, I have learned a very important lesson about living life.

I hope that you will not do the same critical mistake that I made.

Share with me in the comments if you have experienced something similar or how you are trying to live in the moment and in the present as you plan for the future.
