Why Marketing is Like Parenting

It’s an ongoing process. I always like to say that it is like giving birth to a child. You are pregnant for nine months and then you give birth. And yes, it’s intense!

I’ve never been through the process myself. But I know many people who have, and it’s an intense process. It’s painful, hard, and it’s difficult, but you’re just starting the processes of parenting.

Parenting is life long because your child will always be your child. My mom is still in my life and we’re still connected even until now. She’s still parenting me in many ways and helping me in different things.

So when publishing a book, the publishing process is like being pregnant and birthing that book. Then, we have the ongoing processes of marketing.

It doesn’t always have to be intense in every season. There will be seasons where you have to do an intense marketing, like during a book launch or special promotion. It could also be while you’re doing a podcast tour, a blog tour, or you’re doing a lot of speaking engagements. But regardless of its intensity, marketing is a life-long process. There will be times that it will be more or less intense.

You Don’t Have to DO it all TODAY

Some people then feel overwhelmed. And it becomes overwhelming because there’s so much to do. But you know what? You don’t have to do it all today.

It’s a process. It’s the layering of different things that you do over time that’s going to have the biggest impact. You’reoverwhelmed with book marketing going to continue to do things little by little, taking one step at a time.

Right now, to be honest, I’m taking a breath. I’m taking a breather and December is not going to be intense for me. I know I need a little break.

I’ll still do the podcast for Broken Crayons Still Color, and stuff for Author Audience Academy. Yet, it’s not going to be the intensity that November was for me as far as marketing, and book launches goes.

There will be seasons, so don’t pressure yourself. If you pressure yourself then you start having these certain expectations of what you have to do. And it will take the fun out of it all.

You will start to dread it, and then it becomes hard. It becomes laborious and stressful and it comes out of our flesh. Pushing, trying, and striving hard without the fun is not going to be as effective.

So just enjoy the process of parenting your book through the marketing. It’s a marathon, not a sprint, so breathe.

Hope you all have a meaningful Christmas and a fruitful new year.
