Devotionals for Writers

As Christian writers, you and I need the encouragement that devotionals for writers offer. Firstly, we are bombarded daily by a spiritual enemy who seeks to derail the writing God has in store for us.

In this post, we want to share three reasons why spiritual encouragement for writers is necessary and how it impacts the writing we undertake for God’s glory.

Seeking out devotionals for writers will help nourish your journey as a Kingdom writer!

Devotionals for Writers

Reason #1: Christian Writers Need Spiritual Nourishment

One of the primary reasons why devotionals for writers are necessary is the need for regular spiritual nourishment. Moreover, Like a marathon runner who needs to take in fuel and hydration over the course of his/her 26.2 mile race, the Kingdom writer has to stay properly fueled in order to be fruitful for the long haul.

Jesus gives us the blueprint for staying fruitful.

“Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing.” – John 15:5 (NLT)

Therefore, without that daily connection to Jesus, we dry up pretty quickly. By staying connected to our Vine, we are able to offer sweet words of hope to those who read our writing. Moreover, encouragement for writers is crucial in order to be an encouragement to the reader.

We believe that the best writers are also readers who fill themselves daily with God’s Word and other encouraging Christian literature.

When Jesus was tempted to turn stones into bread while on his 40-day fast in the wilderness, he responded,

‘People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’ – Matthew 4:4 (NLT)

We might personalize these words like this,

“Christian writers do not live on Netflix, coffee, pizza or ice cream alone but by the nourishing word that comes from the mouth of God.”

Therefore, It’s time for us to step up to God’s spiritual buffet and fill our plates!

Reason #2: Combatting Our Spiritual Enemy

Devotionals for writers help provide weapons to combat our spiritual enemy, therefore, filling our minds and hearts with encouragement is like ammunition against all the tricks of the devil.

“The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds.” – 2 Corinthians 10:4 (NIV)

Have you ever felt like the enemy has had a stronghold in the following areas?

  • Self Doubt and Insecurity as a Writer – Read Ephesians 2:10
  • Financial worry – Read Matthew 6:31-33
  • Writer’s block – Read Psalm 45:1
  • Lacking motivation – Read 1 Corinthians 15:58
  • Giving up on this writing thing – Read Galatians 6:9
  • Depression – Read Psalm 34:17-18
  • Procrastination – Read Ephesians 5:15-17

The list of strongholds could go on but those are some of the more common things we face as Christian writers. Moreover, we’re able to demolish every stronghold with the hammer of God’s Word. As Jesus said, “And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:32 NLT)

Reason #3: Writing from a Full Cup

Kingdom writers have the unique ability of writing lasting words of impact when they write from a full cup and imagine a cup overflowing with pure, refreshing water and flowing down into rows of empty cups waiting to be filled. Therefore, with God as our Source, we allow our empty lives to be filled with His refreshment and then help refresh the lives of others.

You can almost hear God’s heart breaking as He inspires the prophet Jeremiah to write these words,

“For my people have done two evil things: They have abandoned me—the fountain of living water.

And they have dug for themselves cracked cisterns that can hold no water at all!” – Jeremiah 2:13 NLT)

Devotionals for writers: Life-giving encouragement for writers

The most life-giving encouragement for writers is found in the ‘fountain of living water.’ In fact, Jesus says something similar,

“But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life.” – John 4:14 NLT

Imagine being connected to a constant source of refreshing inspiration that flows onto the pages God leads you to write. Consequently, this is THE source of refreshment and eternal life. Moreover, the only question is whether we’re willing to place ourselves under the fountain of living water to be filled.

We live among people who have abandoned God and dug for themselves cracked cisterns that hold no water. Consequently, this creates a spiritual dryness and thirst that, ultimately, the Jesus in us can satisfy.

If you and I are honest, we have also tried digging our own cracked cisterns by taking advice from the world rather than the Word. Ultimately, It doesn’t take long before we realize the words we write are dry and lifeless during these times.

Lastly, for more encouragement, look over our devotionals for writers resources below and live out your full potential as the Christian writer God has called you to be.
