How much money can you make writing a book? There are many variables involved in how much money you can make writing a book. I will touch on three main ones in this blog post: Influence, Genre, and Marketing. These are only a few of the variables in how to make money writing a book.
Influence
As much as we don’t want to admit it, influence makes a difference in selling anything. People are more apt to buy from someone they know or trust. If you have a following before publishing your book, you will have a better chance of selling your book. That being said, word of mouth helps as well. Not to mention reviews. Reviews are gems to an author. The beauty of this factor is that as you get more established as an author, more known, and have more books to offer, you will see the fruit of your labor.
Don’t lose heart if your first book doesn’t sell big time immediately. Trust in your calling from God, and know that He will see to your book’s success in His own time.
Yes, who you know or how many people you know makes a difference. But there is another factor in this equation and that, my friend, is God. God can give you that which you’re lacking. Ask him to place those that your book would touch in your midst. Jabez called on the Lord, “Oh that you would bless me indeed and enlarge my coast, and that thine hand might be with me, and that thou wouldst keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me!” And God granted him that which he requested.
I Chronicles 4:10 God is not a respecter of persons. What he did for him, he desires to do for you. Ask God to increase your sphere of influence.
Do all that you can and trust God with the rest.
Genre
Some book genres are more popular than others. Here are the 8 most popular book genres for 2025:
- Romance
- Mystery Thriller
- Fantasy & Science Fiction
- Thrillers & Horror
- Young Adult
- Children’s Fiction
- Inspirational, self-help & Religious
- Biography, Autobiography, & Memoir
Your book may not be in one of the popular genres, and if that’s the case, don’t worry, it doesn’t mean it won’t sell. These are just the most popular genres now, and this can change from season to season, year to year. Write in the genre God calls you to and look to him to make your book stand out to the readers that he has specifically called you to write to. Maybe looking at this list, you feel a bit discouraged seeing that your book doesn’t fit into the top four genres.
Is writing a book profitable? Think of the lives you are touching, not the dollars you are making. Yes, granted, we all want to make a good income from our endeavors. However, at the end of the day, you need to be at peace with yourself and what God has called you to do. Base your writing on what God wants you to write about not on what is popular. God won’t forget you. He will bless your hard work, for a man is worthy of his pay.
Marketing
The last thing I want to touch on is marketing. How you market is a big factor in how well your book will sell. I recall when I was a sales representative for a magazine company. I had a client who was very prudent in marketing. What I learned from her was to be versatile and flexible. Pay attention to what works for you and your book. Don’t stay in one place, market in several places, and watch to see what works best!
Another thing is that marketing is more about meeting a need than selling. Look at marketing as a way to reach out to your potential readers. Think about who your ideal reader is: male or female, their age, their pain, their dreams. What problem does your book solve for them? Once again, if you are having a hard time with this, ask God. How much money can you make writing a book? It depends. Don’t worry about what you’ll make, but about what you bring to your readers. Get your message out and trust God with the rest.
Deuteronomy 8:18 But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day.
