{Productivity Tip} How to Use Evernote as Your To-Do List

Want to learn how to use evernote to help you stay out of your email inbox and get things done? One of the biggest mistakes I have made is spending too much time in my email inbox, checking email all day, and using it as a to-do list.

Instead, I’m using Evernote as my to-do list. I have a notebook titled “To Do,” I have a weekly action list note and a note with today’s action list.

I want to show you in this short post and video tutorial how to use Evernote as your to-do list.  I’ve set it up so my to-do lists at the top of my screen on Evernote when I log in. It took me a while to figure this out so I wanted to share it with you.

Step One:  Add a Notebook to Your Shortcuts

You can add notebooks as well as notes to your shortcuts. I’m showing this to you on my iPhone because that’s where I spend a ton of my time, and that’s what I tend to use for my to-do list. You can also use this on the web or the computer apps for Evernote as well.

I do want to make a note that everyone is different, so what works for you is going to be different than what works for me. I want to share my system with you and it might give you some ideas.

If you go into notebooks, click the star at the bottom right hand of the screen. And then you will see where it says “add to shortcuts.”

If you close this screen and go back, you can see that it’s now on your shortcuts list.

Step Two:  Edit the Order of Your Shortcuts

The way to reorganize those shortcuts is you can just click that star again and click edit. There you can remove things, you can move them.

It will show your top three shortcuts at the top of your list. I like to have today’s action list, weekly action list, and then my to-do folder.

Step Three:  Add a Note to Your Shortcuts

When you’re in an actual note, tap on the bottom right-hand corner and then tap on “add to shortcuts” to add it to your shortcuts. That’s how you do it for actual notes.

Step Four:  Organize Your Evernote Home Screen

What you need to do is click the gear in the top left-hand corner. Then click on “customize the home screen.” Here you can choose to show the shortcuts and the notebooks.

Then you want to make sure that under “show details” you have the shortcuts on. This will allow you to have the setup that I am using.

The Power of Using Evernote Instead of Email for To-Do Lists

The power comes in being able to, first of all, stay out of your email inbox so you can move forward in your goals. Then when you have a weekly action list it gives you direction for that week.

I recommend having no more than three things on your weekly action list possible, and then break that down each day. Go in each day, look at your weekly action list, and decide what you need to get done today in the time that you have in order to achieve that goal.

In our forums, in Author Audience Academy we have take-action plans. This is a powerful part of your membership.

You can have your take action plan on Evernote but you can also post it in our forums. This allows me to give you coaching on your plans. It allows you to have accountability within our community. This is one of the best ways to get value from the community at AuthorAudienceAcademy.com, is to be able to post your action plans in the forums each week so you can move forward in your goals AND to get coaching from me on those goals.

We also have our Take Action Workshops each month, and we have a forum for writing accountability where you can get accountability for the writing that you want to accomplish.

Summary

Consider using Evernote for your action lists, your to-do folder where you keep all your list of to-do’s and consider joining us at Author Audience Academy, where we can give you accountability and I can give you coaching daily in our forums to help you reach your goals.
