If your days feel packed and writing keeps getting pushed to the bottom of your list, you’re not alone.
The good news?
You don’t need hours of free time to make progress on your book. Today, I’ll share three practical ways to make time for writing, even in your busiest seasons—so you can start fresh and finish what God has called you to write.
Let’s dive in!
1. Shift Your Mindset About Writing Time
Many writers believe they need long, uninterrupted hours to make meaningful progress. But the truth is, you can make progress in small, consistent moments. It doesn’t take a perfect plan or hours of free time—just 15 minutes a day can make a difference.
Instead of waiting for inspiration or the “perfect time,” take action. Inspiration often comes after you get started. I call this micro-writing: short, focused sessions that build momentum. Set a timer for 15 minutes, and you’ll be surprised by how much you can write.
Invite God into these moments. Even when your writing time feels short, His presence can multiply your efforts and make them more impactful. Don’t underestimate what He can do when you take one obedient step at a time.
2. Block Time for Your Writing Like an Appointment
If you don’t plan ahead, it’s easy to let a day slip away without writing a single word. By intentionally blocking time, you’ll create a rhythm that allows you to consistently make time for writing.
Look at your schedule and identify where you can fit in small chunks of writing time—early mornings, lunch breaks, or evenings. Even unconventional pockets, like school pickup lines or quick dictation sessions while walking, can add up to real progress.
For example, my husband CJ writes consistently by going to a coffee shop in the afternoons. The small investment of buying a coffee keeps him accountable and focused.
What about you?
Block off time, treat it like a priority, and see how God uses those efforts to move you forward.
3. Find Accountability to Stay Consistent
Writing can feel isolating, and that’s when procrastination and self-doubt creep in. Finding accountability can make all the difference in helping you make time for writing and stay motivated.
Accountability comes in many forms—joining a writing group, partnering with a writing buddy, or participating in a challenge. The encouragement and connection of community will remind you that you’re not alone on this journey.
That’s why we created our free Writing Week Challenge. For five days, you’ll write for just 15 minutes a day alongside a group of supportive writers. You’ll see real progress, share wins, and build momentum for your writing.
