Notes from this episode:
There are so many reasons to write short Kindle eBooks. Personally, I have been writing this type of book for many years and people enjoy reading shorter books.
We are all busy and we all have a lot to do. Therefore, if I can find one book to read quickly, get my question answered, and move on, I’m a happy camper.
A short book is easy for your readers to consume. A lot of readers will read books over their lunch break or when they have a few minutes. Some short books can be finished within a one-hour lunch break.
The best part about writing a short book? It’s quicker to write!
It’s a quick win and can help us build momentum for the next book.
The Book Length
A question I am often asked is how long should the book be? For short Kindle eBooks, I recommend a length of about 10,000 words. It equals out about 60-70 print pages. This is the length of most of our short eBooks. However, your book can be anywhere from 6,000-20,000 words.

Thank you CJ and Shelley. The timing is perfect. I’ve been writing short stories but am excited about your short ebook idea, which I didn’t know that a market for shorter books existed. I enjoy shorter books and sometimes am perplexed at the length of current novels then become more frustrated to learn that the book is the first of five (or more) in a series, all massive lengths. God bless you and your writing!
Great James! I’m glad this encouraged you.
CJ & Shelley,
Thank you for the encouraging video. I published a full-length book (246 print pages) titled, “Life Resumed: After a Catastrophic Even or Other Loss” that’s not selling on Amazon despite several good reviews and a timely topic (healing from loss). I’m considering writing/publishing the type of Kindle book you describe in the hopes of building some momentum. Do you have any other suggestions? Look forward to a reply at your convenience. Thanks, Paulina. .
Paulina – I would also suggest that you look at the content inside your longer book and see if you could repurpose some of it for shorter books. We did this with our book Forgiveness Formula. We republished a section of it as a shorter book titled “Trusting God When Bad Things Happen” and it was received well.
This is just what I needed to find today! I am an artist, but this year, I felt the Holy Spirit leading me to lead a home group about prayer. And He told me to write the content! It was a wonderful experience for myself and for my group. I wrote a new chapter each week. As I wrote, I felt like each chapter could be its own book. Exciting, overwhelming, and daunting. Even more daunting is after meeting with an editor (who is wonderful by the way), I realize that what I have written so far is a rough draft. I have so much more work to do, and I don’t want to lay aside my art in order to become a full-time writer.
After watching this video, I believe I can break this “fresh manna”, that I wrote every week, into several small books. I feel a burden has been lifted from my shoulders and I’m excited to make chapter 1 into a small Kindle book.
Lisa – yay! I’m so happy to hear this. How is it going for you so far?
