I wrote a book now what? The daunting question that every first-time Author asks themselves once their book is finished. In this blog post, I hope to answer that question with finesse.
So, you have now reached the moment you have been waiting for, the completion of your book. The endless hours of toiling over every word and every expression have paid off. You now have a finished piece of art, a special expression. A unique work that only you could have written. With much diligence, you did your research of what platform you wanted to utilize for your book. It’s now official you are an Author. But now you are probably asking yourself, I wrote a book now what? I have the answer to that question, marketing. But how you market your book depends on three key factors that I am going to cover. You will need to do some self introspection to discover what marketing approach fits you best.
Personality
First up is personality. Personality is an essential key in deciding how you want to market your book. Are you an introvert, extrovert, or somewhere in the middle? Do you love being the center of attention or would you rather be behind the scenes? Now, of course, you are probably somewhere in the middle, being that you took the step of writing a book. But what personality do you tend to lean more towards? Where you are most comfortable is where you will really shine. That’s not to say that a little stretching out of your comfort zone won’t hurt. Being flexible as a writer has its perks! Are you starting to grasp the answer to the question, you wrote a book, now what?
Style
Second up is style. When considering a platform from which to market your book, think about what you would be comfortable with. For example, would you rather just write? In other words, no audio, no videos, and no interviews. Low volume of live calls and deadlines. Your main job would be to learn SEO well and write to your heart’s content. This is a perfect marketing platform for introverts and those who don’t want to market. You could collaborate with other sites for blog posts and have a pitch for your book in your author bio at the bottom of your post. Do you have a blog of your own? You could write posts about your book and share snippets from your book.
Another option is to write articles for magazines that you admire and have a pitch for your book in your author bio at the bottom of the article. Create social media posts and short Kindle ebooks. If this sounds like you, then you could focus mainly on a writing platform as your marketing.
Or perhaps you are the opposite, one who loves to talk. If so, you could market your book through podcasts, interviews, and guest speaker events. There’s no right answer on this. You might want to even mix it up. You get to decide how you want to market. Your style, your way!
Investment
Third up is investment. An investment can be measured in three ways: energy, time, and money. How much of an investment do you want to make? Now of course this answer could change later on, as do seasons. But for right now, think about how much investment you want to give to your book. It will help you in deciding which marketing strategy fits you best. If you are looking for a marketing platform that doesn’t involve a lot of time and money, you could go with a mini-platform. An example of a mini platform would be Amazon, Goodreads, or Bookbub. If spending money is not an issue, you could go with paid ads. Keep in mind you do need to be willing to learn ads and monitor your ads weekly.
In Conclusion
What to do after publishing a book, market! But market your way according to your personality, style, and by how much or how little you want to invest. On the subject of personality, I think most of us have a bit of both personalities in us. My personal marketing strategy is a lot of writing and creativity with social media pins. I create my own social media pins and love to write. However, I am putting together a blueprint for my own podcast, Tea Time with Lizzy, and I am open to the idea of podcast interviews. With that being said, I need to get back to working on my media kit and my podcast. Mix and match what works for you, there is no cookie cutter answer when it comes to marketing. It’s your book, your business, your voice! Whatever way you choose to do it, just do it. Be sure to include God in your marketing.
I leave you with this promise from God’s word…whatever ye do, do all to the glory of God. I Corinthians 10:31
