The Magic of Repurposing
In my last training, I talked about repurposing and how it can help you complete your first draft really fast. But in this training, it’s not just repurposing for your book. Today, we are going to talk about repurposing your marketing materials into a publishing idea!
Are you excited?
As I always say, I want you to work smarter and not harder. So doing something one time to not only market your current book but also using it to publish a new book is interesting, isn’t it?
My current book project is Broken Crayons Still Color. Meanwhile, I also have about four other books that I’m working on. It has all come together.
I have three of books that I’m working on with a co-author, Heather Hart and I have another book Prolific Publisher. The last title is almost ready to publish, and then I have this really big project Broken Crayons Still Color. So, I was thinking, “How can I market this book to draw in my target audience?”
Knowing Your Target Audience
Knowing your target audience is key. If you know your target audience you know where they hang out. You would also know what they’re consuming online and where you might reach them. You will also identify what kind of methods you can use to reach them.
My target audience for Broken Crayons Still Color tends to be Christian Women and it’s open to anyone. I didn’t make it just a women’s book study, but that tends to be my target audience.
While thinking about marketing Broken Crayons Still Color, I had an idea come to me one day.
“This book is not just about me, my stories or sharing what God has taught me through his word. It’s not just about the transformational things have happened to my life. So much more than me, this is about sharing other people’s stories.”
So I decided that I wanted to do interviews and I thought these interviews would either be on Facebook Live or some sort of video. It is something that could be shared or go viral. The person being interviewed will most likely want to share it because they’re sharing their story.
Think About Repurposing
So I had this idea for marketing. But then I thought, “How can I do this work, interviewing the people who are going to be sharing their stories, one time, and benefit from it in multiple ways?”
It’s been on my mind and I’ve been thinking about it and praying about it.
Initially, I had this idea to transcribe these audios and then use those transcripts in a follow-up book. But I still wasn’t sure on how that’s going to work.
I don’t want just another anthology book. Don’t get me wrong. I love anthology books and I’ve published many of them. However, I want something different, something new and something fresh. I want something that is a good follow-up to this particular book.
Then an idea came to me last weekend when we were traveling. Make it a devotional! Not just a devotional, but a devotional with journaling prompts and journaling space. Then it will also have additional coloring pages. I created coloring pages for my book for each chapter.
All of a sudden, I thought “This is great for my target audience, a devotional book.”
I asked my beta readers and so far, the feedback has been really good. And now, I already have a basic outline of how I’m going to format each of the devotionals.
The transcripts will be heavily edited and it will kind of be in a different format. After I do the interviews, I’ll decide which particular
interviewees I will invite to be part of this devotional book.
If they agree to the terms of service then we will move forward with the project.
But then I got another idea. I thought, “Not only is this going to be an amazing marketing idea, it’s also going to become another product; another published book!”
So it’s going to be a video which will be on YouTube. I could upload it to Facebook, which I probably will do as well.
After that, the video is going to have the audio stripped out of it for the Broken Crayons Still Color podcast. Then the transcript is going to be used for a devotional book. Wow! It’s just so exciting.
Have a Prayer Team
There is a power in a prayer team. Before I got all these wonderful ideas, I sent this prayer request to my prayer team. They pray for me every week and so I asked them to pray for marketing ideas.
And I believe, it’s because of their prayers that I got this idea. That is the power of a prayer team.
So if you don’t have a prayer team yet start one now!
How Can You Repurpose?
There are so many ways that you can use your marketing materials and repurpose them for other functions. You don’t have to be spinning your wheels doing a million things. Just think about one thing you can do really well and then use it in multiple ways.
That’s exactly what I do with these training. I record them live on Facebook. Afterward, it gets edited and the audio goes on my podcast while the video goes on YouTube. The audio gets transcribed and the edited transcript then goes on my blog.
So from this one fifteen-to-twenty-minute video, I get so much leverage. Plus, some of the transcripts are going into future books.
So there are so many ways that you can use marketing for future publishing ideas. What kind of ideas do you have? Has this sparked anything for you?
